It’s time for another episode of Where are they now? I previously wrote about Charlie and my former grade school classmates, and now it’s time to move slightly forward in time to my freshman year of college and my one semester at Gettysburg.

The most significant Mike in my life was a guy I met at Gettysburg College in the fall of 1997. Despite my good grades and potential, I was really bad at picking a college. I applied to three, small liberal arts colleges on the east coast, all pretty much indistinguishable from each other. I went to Gettysburg because it was the only one of the three that accepted me. I didn’t like it at all and don’t think I would have liked either of the other two.

Gettysburg College, on a campus with no town around it to speak of, was filled with 2,000 rich white kids from Connecticut and me and Mike. Me with my green and then purple hair, tongue piercing, bad attitude, and flannel shirts. Mike with his carpenter jeans (don’t judge – it was the 90s), floppy hair, love of weed, and cigarette over the ear. At the time, I had a yuppy boyfriend who went to Ithaca, so nothing ever happened between me and Mike (except once when I went back to visit the year after I dropped out), but maybe it should have. I might have stayed there then and become the US Senator I thought I was destined to be. Shudder.

As it was, our platonic relationship was not enough to entice Mike to get out of bed in the morning and go to breakfast or study groups with me, and despite my outward rebellion, I was still an academic nerd. I wanted to do well in school. But I wanted friends too. Mike was one of my only two real friends there but since he kept different hours than I did and got caught up in an endless cycle of discipline for his drug use on campus, that friendship wasn’t enough for me. I dropped out and later transferred to SUNY at Buffalo where there were 30,000 students and I had no problem finding people I could connect with.

But I always wonder what happened to Mike. I really liked him and hope he did well for himself. Mike Winske of Mechanicsburg, if you’re out there, say hi!
